The Official Simerian Explorer Guide

Q: What are runes and what are they for?

Runes
A: Runes are fossil stones with strange markings on them found by the Simerian Explorer. They are required to pass the Transubstantiation Temple[1].

Q: Are the strange markings on the runes part of a real-life ancient tribe tongue?

A: You are correct; the runes correspond almost identically to the Viking Runic alphabet. The Vikings were seafaring warriors from Northern Europe who reached as far as Russia to the East, and Canada to the west over 1,000 years ago, becoming (presumably) the first Europeans to discover North America. The Runes in Simeria can correlate to the fact that Vikings raided these ancient civilizations, leading to their collapse.

Q: How many runes are there and how available are they?

A: As of May 2020 there are a total of 27 runes. Runes from Simerian Explorer are all R11, and the ones from Rune Rescue are R16. That number does not seem to have any influence on availability as some seem to be more common than others. The number of runes you get may be based on the number of quests you have finished. For example, you can get a rune roughly every 10 to 30 quests. Getting one rune followed by another rune is rare but possible. However, it is still normal not to get a rune even when you have completed 40 quests and get 6 to 8 runes every 100 quests. Distribution of the runes is random; some may be more common than others and their availability fluctuates day by day. When the quest had just been introduced, Rune A seemed to be the hardest rune to come by, but as the quest matured, Rune A seems to be as available as the others and Rune W may be rewarded by 3402 quests. Other people seem not to have problems with it, so suffice it to say the runes seem to be distributed evenly nowadays. The key is to go on a roll and complete a high number of quests. This is the wishlist page for them: http://www.marapets.com/wishlist.php?do=browse&id=991

Rune

Q: How do I find runes?

A: The Simerian Explorer rewards you with a rune randomly when finishing his quest. However, completing the Simerian Explorer Treasure Map is needed to have lifetime access. Rune Rescue rewards you with Runes V, W, and Y depending on your score.

Q: How can I get the Treasure Map?

A: The Simerian Explorer Treasure Map first appeared in the Explorer and Light Fairy AU Sets from July 2008, which retired at the beginning of 2009. For a limited time, you could purchase 3 random pieces of the Simerian Explorer Treasure Map on the Account Upgrades page in August 2012. Four years later, a new version of the Light Fairy Account Upgrade was released in September that retired at the end of November. The last time the Simerian Explorer Map was available from an AU Set was the Easter Account Upgrade (April 2019), where it stuck out like a sore thumb. Now, you can obtain the Treasure Map from the Account Upgrades Shop for roughly $11USD (American Dollars) or £5UK PoundsIt is unlikely to find any in shop search currently (#6 was in shop search for 492k July 17, 2009). You should expect to pay anywhere from 500,000 to 2 million MP for EACH piece in Trades or Shop Search, to a minimum of 8 million MP total for all the pieces. Once you have all the pieces to the exact location of the Explorer, you can click on the Explorer image to begin questing!

Q: When were runes and the Explorer Quest introduced?

A: The first Runes (and Simerian Explorer) were introduced on 21st July 2008 and this is the NEWS page with the release. Runes V, W, and Y were introduced along with Rune Rescue's High Score Rewards.

Q: How much are runes worth?

A: Since the quest got introduced over 10 years ago, the value of runes has varied between 295k to 1.2m MP (or even priceless). Some desperate sellers have sold runes in their shop for as low as 50,000MP, but as of today, that's as rare as Marapets re-releasing the Cartoon Costume. (I could be proven wrong next year, though.)

Q: How many MP in total should I spend in one Explorer quest?

A: If you are a beginner and have a very small amount of MP (under 200,000) overall, try not to spend more than 6,000 MP per quest. Once you have sold two or more runes, you should go ahead and spend a little more but it is wise not to go over 12,000 per quest. Click on the image to the left to look at an example of the items on one of the quests, which came up to 15,000 marapoints.

Q: What other rewards does the Explorer give?

A: The only rewards he gives apart from Runes are MP and his stamp. MP rewards can vary from 1,300 to 4,000 or so (without a rune). With a rune, the reward is usually more than 4,000 but no more than about 8,000 or so.

Q: Do you recommend putting the Explorer map together?

A: In the beginning, you can make 13 million MP by the time you finish 1,000 quests. As more items are added, the items the Explorer asks for are starting to become more costly than ever before. You be the judge.

Q: Can you sell me, or give me runes/pieces of the treasure map?

A: Huh, NO.
